Een realistische fictie: de Heerlijcke reyse van Jan Aerts

Samenvatting

Deze bijdrage wil enige duidelijkheid scheppen in de ontstaansgeschiedenis en de overlevering van het reisverhaal dat een zekere Jan Aerts uit Mechelen aan het einde van de vijftiende eeuw zou hebben geschreven over zijn pelgrimstochten naar Jeruzalem, het Katharinaklooster, het graf van de Wijzen uit het Oosten en het graf van de apostel Thomas, in het gezelschap van een Portugese handelsgezant.

Dit verhaal heeft namelijk menig lezer misleid wat betreft het verloop en de waarachtigheid van de reis, de periode waarin het verhaal is geschreven en zelfs de vermeende auteur. Hoewel de tekst een beetje schatplichtig is aan Jan Van Mandeville’s Reysen int heilighe lant en Bernhard von Breydenbachs Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam vertoont de verhaallijn ook gelijkenissen met drie reisverhalen uit de periode 1490-1515, waarin het hoofdpersonage ook beweert naar het graf van de apostel Thomas te (willen) reizen: Tvoyage door Ambrosius Zeebout, het Libro del infante don Pedro de Portugal en Die Pilgerfahrt des Ritters Arnold von Harff.

Abstract

This article aims to shed some light on the origins of a book of travel which is purported to have been written by Jan Aerts fom Mechlin in the Duchy of Brabant at the end of the Fifteenth Century. Jan Aerts claims that he has made pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Saint Catherine’s Monastery, the tomb of the biblical Magi and the tomb of the apostle Thomas in the company of a trade agent of the Portuguese crown.

Throughout its existence this story has mislead its readers as to the circumstances and truthfulness of the journey, the period in which the story was written and even the identity of the author. Although indebted to some degree to The Voyage and Travels of Sir John Mandeville and Bernhard von Breydenbach’s Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam, the plot of the story also resembles three travel stories which were written between 1490 and 1515, in which the protagonists also claim that they have endeavoured a journey to the tomb of
the apostle Thomas: Ambrosius Zeebout’s Tvoyage, the Libro del infante don Pedro de Portugal and The pilgrimage of Arnold von Harff.
