Reflectie, een noodzakelijke vorm van vernieuwing

Een paar beschouwingen over de toestand van de linguïstiek

Samenvatting

Ik wil hier aandacht vragen voor de schrikbarende verwaarlozing in
de recente taalkundige praktijk, van het feitenmateriaal aangereikt
door taal en taalgebruik zelf. In de laatste decennia heeft de taalkunde
zich teveel verloren in theorievorming, waarbij taalfeiten het onderzoek
alleen maar binnen konden dringen, als voorbeelden ter adstructie
van stellingen i.v.m. het abstracte taalvermogen van de mens. Ik
zou willen pleiten voor de omgekeerde weg: het onderzoek van concrete
taalfeiten en het onderkennen van de factoren van allerlei aard
(met name ook semantische) waardoor die bepaald en gestuurd worden.
Het uiteindelijke doel, inzicht in het taalvermogen van de mens,
hoeft daarbij niet uit het gezichtsveld te verdwijnen, in tegendeel.

I want to draw attention to the terrifying tendency in recent linguistic
research, to neglect the factual data provided by specific languages
and the use that is made of them. In recent decades linguistics has lost
itself in theory formation concerning the abstract language capacity
of humans. Concrete linguistic facts could make their way into this
kind of research only as examples adstructing abstract hypotheses. I
would advocate the opposite direction: a linguistic practice starting
from concrete language facts and the investigation of a wide range of
factors, including semantic ones, that dominate the choice between
alternative ways of expression. It is my firm conviction that such
practice will further the insight into the human capacity to create,
develop and make use of language.
